Blogger Interview: From the Shadows

About the Blogger:

From the Shadows is a book blog with a paranormal focus. From the Shadows is also the brainchild of dark poet E.J. Stevens. E.J. Stevens is the author of the haunting collection of dark poetry From the Shadows and of the chilling collection of paranormal poetry Shadows of Myth and Legend. E.J. is a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She has worked a variety of jobs that demonstrate the human condition including schools, psychiatric hospitals and (*shudder*) shopping malls. E.J. currently resides in a magical forest on the coast of Maine where she finds daily inspiration for her writing. E.J. About the Blog:

I currently review books in the paranormal genre. My favorite books are YA Paranormal, Paranormal Romance, and Urban Fantasy.

My reviews are posted on From the Shadows, linked on E.J.'s Book Review Index, and cross posted on Goodreads. Reviews and author events are promoted on Goodreads, Twitter, and Book Blogs.

At this time I do not accept ebooks or pdf copies of books for review.

Interview:

1. How long have you been blogging?

I started blogging five years ago, however, I didn't begin work on my current book blog From the Shadows until September 2009.

2. Why did you decide to blog?

I love sharing my passion for reading and writing with others so blogging became another way to communicate with readers and authors.

3. What books do you blog about and why?

From the Shadows is a paranormal book blog. I focus on reviewing and discussing books in the Paranormal Romance, Young Adult, and Urban Fantasy genres since these are the books that I enjoy most.

4. What memes can be found on your blog?

I enjoy participating in Teaser Tuesday and the Book Blogger Hop but I only join in the fun if I am sure that I can comment on each participating blog. In recent weeks, due to time constraints and the enormous number of blog participants, I haven't been able to take part in these memes. I often still stop by the hosting sites though since these memes are a great way to discover new book blogs.

5. What is your review style like?

I have a format that I follow for all of my book reviews. One of the distinguishing characteristics would be my opening line. I try to catch the reader's attention by summing up the book in one sentence. I then go on to provide more detail about the story and what I enjoyed most about the book. I am very careful to never give spoilers so my reviews of books that fall later in a series usually provide less story details and focus more on my impressions of the book in general. I end my reviews with a discussion of who I would recommend the book to. If I have posted a recent interview with the author of the book being reviewed, I will also post a link to the interview so readers can learn more about the author.

6. If you can describe your blog in one word, what would it be and why?

Paranormal. All of the book reviews, guest blogs, author interviews, and book news at From the Shadows have a paranormal focus.

7. What advice can you give other bloggers about blogging?

Be true to yourself and don't be afraid to share your passion for the books you love. As a book blogger you will never make everyone happy all of the time. Not all of your readers will agree with your reviews but so long as your reviews are honest you won't have anything to worry about.

8. What kind of promotion techniques do you use to get followers?

I love hosting giveaways on my blog. While most of my giveaways do not require being a follower to enter I do have follower-only giveaways whenever I reach a follower milestone. There is a lot of controversy over follower-only giveaways but I like to reward my followers for continuing to support my blog. These giveaways usually have the added benefit of bringing new readers to the blog who often become new followers.

9. If there was something you’d want your readers to take away from reading your blog, what would it be?

My hope is that through my book reviews and guest author spotlights I am able to connect readers with authors they haven't discovered before. I have found some of my favorite authors this way and continue to follow other book bloggers to learn about new PNR and UF authors.

10. What can readers look forward to from your blog in the future?

I have a very special event planned for August 8th through August 15th. I am gearing up for a fun week of paranormal guest authors and giveaways! Friday the 13th Week at From the Shadows promises to be loads of fun. I will be giving away thirteen new paranormal romance and urban fantasy novels as well as paranormal prize packs filled with bookmarks, postcards, posters, and journals.

Just one question, what controversy is there about followers only giveaways?

  3. Man of la Books,

Great question! One recent discussion of this controversy can be seen over at Parajunkee's Book Blogging 101 (http://www.parajunkee.com/2010/05/book-blogging-101-why-host-contest.html) discussion of hosting contests and giveaways. Some people feel that having a followers only giveaway is "buying followers" and they have strong feelings against it. Personally, I like to reward my faithful followers with the occasional follower only giveaway. I love my followers! :)

    xx,
    E.J
