Writing Quirks

17 comments:

  1. OMG..funny you should ask, remember I am the one who started a website dedicated to people who lve outside the box..well yes I have a quirk..I must have a strong hot cup of tea and sourdough pretzel nibbles plus two ice cold bottles of H20.
The reason for this is I sit at the computer for hours non stop writng and forget to eat. The liquids keep me hydrated and it's a great way to lose weight.by the time I finish my next book I'll weigh 27 lbs..thanks 4 asking..kjforce

  2. @KJ = I actually used to do that. Write hours on end. But i realized that it becomes obsessive. There was this time I lost a whole week to writing. I hardly ate and hardly came out of my room. I don't even remember much of that week. Hence, I pace myself now.

  4. @Sam = As far as quirks go, I guess it's pretty tame.

  5. My 10 pound poodle on my desk. Patchouli
Incense. Genmaicha tea. And my cell phone
off! Not sure if these are writing quirks. Jo

  6. @Jo = They certainly can be if you constantly need them before you can get any writing done. :-)

  7. Ha, Ha, that's funny Kate--your book is titled 'Taste' and you brush your teeth before you write! Hmmm...
I like to play a game of solitaire or mahjong (empty my brain), and eat Oreo cookies--had to ditch the Oreo's though, too fattening (sad).

  8. I have to have answered all my emails, have my headphones plugged in and my Itunes list named "Writing" playing and I have to have had a shower. The songs are on repeat and so repetious by this point that I don't notice the words, but they block out the talking going on around me at home. WWIII can be going on with my boys and I'm oblivious.

  9. @Nishi = Good call with the Oreos. Although, I'm partial to the double stuffed myself.

@Heather = I sometimes write using music as well. It's like when you get into the zone, anything can happen and you're oblivious. :-)

  10. I get my best writing done when I'm driving. Well not me personally, but when my husband drives on long road trips. I have my laptop and write while he drives.

  11. @Rebecca = Got me nervous there for a moment. :-P

  12. If I could nail down just one, I'd tell you about it, but there are so many... sometimes I think they are more than just quirks, they are avoidance strategies!

  13. @Rosanne = I feel that way sometimes too!

  15. It really depends on the scene I am writing. It will determine my music. Dark and durgey or fun upbeat. But often times I will have a visual scene up in Second Life that I can refer to on the SIM my husband and I create on. We take our characters and create avatars out of them. This helps us storyboard.

I need quiet and the kids in bed or I'll loose my thought - that's why I usually write late at night :)Oh a glass of whiskey usually gets me to be in a frame of mind to write horror.

Not quite sure if that's quirky... but its me!

  16. @Amy = Thank you for the award!

@Dianna = I actually discovered another quirk. Well, I guess, more like it was pointed out by my writer friend Sam. :-P

  17. I have to have music playing. Usually punk, post-punk, or some other form of guitar-heavy rock. And booze. Usually a glass of dark rum mixed with soda helps the tiny engines start moving in the right direction. Also, I have to use a computer to write the actual work. Fragments and ideas go longhand.
